Geography and Layout

Manhattan is a 22.8-square-mile island bounded by the Hudson River to the west, the East River to the east, and the Harlem River to the northeast. It is connected to the outer boroughs and New Jersey by bridges, tunnels, and ferry service.

The borough is organized on a grid system above Houston Street, with numbered streets running east-west and avenues running north-south. Below Houston Street, the street pattern is irregular and follows older colonial-era roads.

Housing Stock

Manhattan's residential inventory is predominantly co-op and condominium apartments. Pre-war co-ops are concentrated on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and in Greenwich Village. Newer condo developments are found in Midtown, the Financial District, Hudson Yards, and along the East River waterfront.

Brownstone and limestone townhouses exist in neighborhoods including the Upper East Side, West Village, Harlem, and the Upper West Side.

Transit and Access

• Metro-North Railroad at Grand Central Terminal (service to Westchester and Connecticut)
• Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit at Penn Station
• PATH train service to New Jersey at several lower Manhattan and midtown stations
• Multiple bus routes, ferry terminals, and Citi Bike stations throughout

Notable Landmarks and Districts

Central Park (843 acres), Riverside Park, and Hudson River Park provide green space. The borough contains major commercial districts including Midtown, the Financial District, SoHo, and the Flatiron District.
