Port Washington

Geography and Layout

Port Washington is a hamlet at the northern tip of the Cow Neck Peninsula in the Town of North Hempstead. It is surrounded by water on three sides — Manhasset Bay to the west, Hempstead Harbor to the east, and Long Island Sound to the north.

The community includes the incorporated villages of Baxter Estates, Manorhaven, and Port Washington North, as well as the unincorporated areas of Sands Point and Beacon Hill.

Housing Stock

Port Washington offers a broad range of housing: waterfront estates in Sands Point, Victorians and Colonials near the village center, Cape Cods and split-levels in mid-peninsula sections, and condominiums and co-ops near the harbor and train station.

Transit and Access

• LIRR Port Washington station — the terminus of the Port Washington Branch, approximately 36 minutes to Penn Station
• Local bus service connecting to Flushing
• Port Washington Boulevard leads to I-495 and the Cross Island Parkway
• Approximately 22 miles northeast of Midtown Manhattan

Waterfront and Parks

The harbor supports recreational and commercial boating. Town Dock, Sunset Park, and Bar Beach provide public waterfront access. The Sands Point Preserve, a 216-acre property, includes nature trails, gardens, and historic structures.

Commercial Areas

Main Street runs through the center of Port Washington with restaurants, shops, and services. The area near the train station includes additional retail and dining.
